NEMO Solid Waste Management District Receives DNR Grant

The Missouri Department of Natural Resources has awarded $104,827 to the Northeast Missouri Solid Waste Manage-ment District to administer waste reduction and recycling projects in Adair, Clark, Knox, Lewis, Schuyler and Scotland counties.

The district's executive board is responsible for administering the funds, which are disbursed as sub-grants to projects within the district. This distribution method allows each district to fund projects that compliment or enhance other waste reduction and recycling activities.

The Solid Waste Management Fund is made up of tipping fees charged to each ton of waste disposed of in Missouri landfills or processed through transfer stations that move waste to out-of-state disposal sites.

With the passage of the Solid Waste Management Law in 1990, Missouri's goal is to reduce the amount of waste sent to landfills. The projects funded by this grant will help the Northeast Missouri Solid Waste Management District achieve local waste management goals.
