Scotland County Receives $273,800 CDBG For Bridge Replacements

Scotland County was among three northeast Missouri counties to receive funding for bridge repair through the Community Development Block Grant program. The awards were announced August 17 by Governor Bob Holden as part of a $2.5 million CDBG package for rural communities.

Scotland County will receive $273,800 to pay for the replacement of 10 bridges in the county. Schuyler County received a $277,000 grant while Sullivan County was awarded $244,151.

The construction plans in Scotland County call for a variety of sizes of bridges to be replaced. The largest project will span more than 80 feet. All 10 units will be the standard 20.5 feet wide and will be constructed as "non-post" bridges meaning they can sustain any weight load legal to travel on Missouri roads.

Northeast Missouri Regional Planning Commission wrote the grant applications for both Scotland and Schuyler counties. NMRPC Director David Shoush indicated Schuyler County will use the funds to replace eight bridges, including the use of "structures in lieu of bridges" that were first used in Scotland County a few years ago. The plan allows a bridge to be replaced by a dam, which not only creates a water source for adjoining landowners but produces a sound structure on which a road may be built and maintained.
