Harvest Time Keeping Local Firemen Busy

The Scotland County Fire Department responded to its third harvest-related call of the fall season Friday, November 2. The department was called to the Glen Cowell farm north of Arbela for a combine fire at approximately 3:45 p.m.

Upon arrival the fire department found the machine totally engulfed by flames. The blaze was quickly doused, saving the corn head, but the combine was a total loss.

Seven firemen responded to the call taking three fire trucks to the scene. The Rescue unit was called away from the scene for an accident west of Memphis (see story on Page 1).

The day before, the fire department had responded to the Delmar Kice farm east of Memphis where a combine fire had spread into the crop residue in a cut cornfield.

Four firemen responded to the call taking two fire trucks to the scene. The property owner was able to extinguish the combine fire. The firemen quickly doused the grass fire that had spread from the cornfield to the adjoining draw. They were assisted at the scene by several neighboring landowners as well as the Scotland County Sheriff's Department.

The Fire Department responded to a fire in a grain truck near Brock Station last week.

On Saturday, November 3, the fire department responded to a fire west of Memphis where a trash fire had spread into a cut corn field.

Nine firemen responded to the call taking three fire trucks to the scene. The Downing Fire Department also assisted at the fire as the Scotland County Department was previously involved with the search for a lost hunter in the northeast part of the county (see story on page 1.)
