SCR-I School Sign Demolished In One Vehicle Accident

A Scotland County man escaped serious injury when his vehicle left the roadway and traveled some 700 feet after the driver apparently blacked out.

According to the Memphis Police Department Ona Lee B. Spees, 84, was southbound on Highway 15 in a 1988 Mercury when he apparently blacked out. The vehicle left the road near the entrance to the Scotland County R-I School District bus barn. It crashed through a fiber optics box owned by Northeast Missouri Rural Telephone before smashing through the school district's lighted sign. The vehicle traveled on to strike the guide wire of a light pole before crossing Lover's Lane and finally crashing into a fence behind the Scotland County Livestock Auction where the vehicle came to rest.

Spees suffered minor injuries and was taken to Scotland County Memorial Hospital by private vehicle. He was admitted for observation.

The vehicle traveled nearly 750 feet after leaving the roadway. The fiber optics box and the school sign were completely destroyed in the accident. The Spees vehicle was towed from the scene.
