Fire Department Responds To Two Calls Over Weekend

The Scotland County Fire Department responded to a pair of calls over the November 17th weekend.

A combine fire was reported on property owned by Speers Farms located northwest of Memphis at approximately 12:10 p.m. November 17.

The fire department responded to the call with more than a dozen firemen and four fire trucks.

Upon arrival at the scene, located in the rear of a corn field, the firemen found a John Deere combine completely engulfed in flames. The firemen used three hose teams to douse the fire. They were on the scene approximately an hour. The combine was a complete loss.

The second fire call came in at 10:30 p.m. November 17. The department responded to a brush fire at the Richard L. Briggs residence southwest of Memphis.

A trash fire had spread into a brush pile the day before and when winds began whipping the embers in the air the following evening the landowners called the fire department because of concern the blaze would spread to a nearby row of hay bales.

Firemen doused the blaze allowing the landowner to drag the logs from the brush pile with a tractor and deposit them in a disked field to prevent the fire from spreading or rekindling.

Five firemen responded to the call in two fire trucks. The department was on the scene for approximately one hour.
