RUSSELL ROY SPEES (6/27/1926 - 6/22/2001) BETTY DARLENE SPEES (11/1/1926 - 6/22/2001)

Russell Roy Spees, 75, and Betty Darlene Spees, 74, of Keokuk, IA, died June 22, 2001, at Fort Madison Community Hospital, Fort Madison, IA as the result of an automobile accident.

Betty Darlene Spees was born on November 1, 1926, in Downing, MO, the daughter of James A. and Inez Ruth Brunk Bennett.

She married Russell Roy Spees on May 7, 1944. She had been employed by Montgomery Ward and J& S Pharmacy as a sales clerk, and was a companion and sitter at River Hills Village in Keokuk, IA. She was a member of the First Baptist Church in Keokuk, IA, taught Sunday School for 52 years and had served on the Board of Deaconesses.

Russell Roy Spees was born on June 7, 1926, in Downing, MO the son of William and Nellie Bruner Spees.

He married Betty Darlene Bennett on May 7, 1944. He had been employed by Foote Mineral in production, and later had done carpentry work. He was a member of the First Baptist Church in Keokuk, IA, was a former deacon and served on the Trustee Board.

Survivors include two daughters, Sharon Bode and her husband, Ron of Keokuk, IA, and Patty Means and her husband, David of Grand Junction, CO; a son, Russell James "Rusty" Spees of Keokuk, IA; four grandsons, Brad, Nathanael, Andrew and Matthew; two granddaughters, Lisa and Jenna; four great-grandchildren, Brittany, Brooklyn, Drew and Sydney; two brothers, twin brother, Richard Spees and his wife, Thelma of Keokuk, IA and Ona Lee Spees and his wife, Rosalie of Memphis, MO; and a sister, Jewell Lewis of Lancaster, MO.

Mrs. Spees was preceded in death by her parents; a brother, Billy Bennett; a grandson, Anthony "Tony" Means; and a nephew, Tony Bennett.

Funeral services were held June 26, 2001 at DeJong's Funeral Home in Keokuk, IA, with Pastor Dale Thomas officiating. Burial was in Downing Cemetery in Downing, MO. A memorial has been established.
