OPAL NEWLAND REED (12/07/1911 - 7/27/2001)

Opal Newland Reed, 94, long-time Scotland County resident, died on July 27, 2001, at the Scotland County Care Center in Memphis, MO.

Opal was born December 7, 1906, in Davis County, IA, the third daughter of the Reverend Daniel and Mrs. Emma Deputy Newland.

She was the granddaughter of Mr. and Mrs. Jose Newland and Dr. and Mrs. Ulysses Deptuy.

She married Henry Reed on December 8, 1923.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Henry Reed, Sr., on November 7, 1988; her parents; grandparents; a sister, Ruby Newland Reed; and two infant sisters, Willa and Jesse Newland.

She is survived by one son, Henry Reed, Jr. and wife, Beverly of Columbia, IL; a daughter, Arlene Fugate and husband Charles, of Tyler, TX.

She leaves five grandsons, Michael Fugate and his wife, Georgianna of Auxvasse, MO, Randy Reed and his wife, Debbie of Grover, MO, Tony Fugate and his wife, Debbie of Tyler, TX, Rick Reed and his wife, Mary of Columbia, MO, and Matthew Fugate of Houston, TX; 10 great-grandchildren, and five great-great-grandchildren.

Opal worked for several years as Deputy Clerk and Recorder of Scotland County, MO; was a member of the Presbyterian Church and a past member of the Order of the Eastern Star.

She was a deeply devoted and loving mother and grandmother.

The family has suggested memorials to the Presbyterian Church.

Funeral services were held July 30, 2001, at the Payne Funeral Chapel, Memphis, MO, with Rev. Charles Fugate and Rev. Mike Fugate, officiating. Soloist was Randy Reed. Body bearers were Mike Fugate, Tony Fugate, Matt Fugate, Randy Reed, Rick Reed, and Franklin Reed. Interment was in the Memphis Cemetery, Memphis, MO.
