JAMES D. HARDING
(11/16/1912 - 10/27/2001)



James D. Harding, a former general manager of The Modesto Bee, Modesto, CA, died Saturday at Doctor's Medical Center at the age of 88.

James, a graduate of the University of Missouri School of Journalism, joined McClatchy Newspapers in 1937. He took time out of his newspaper career to serve as a lieutenant commander in the Navy during World War II.

He received a presidential citation for his duty in the Atlantic theater, serving aboard the USS Bogue and the USS Card.

James returned to become advertising manager of The Modesto Bee in 1947. He became the newspaper's business manager in 1964 and was promoted to general manager in 1977.

James was born November 16, 1912, in Memphis, MO, the son of Lenora Harding and grandson of Judge Pettengill.

He lived in Modesto, CA for 50 years. He was a member of Del Rio Golf and Country Club.

Survivors include his wife, Nancy Harding of Modesto, CA; two sons, Dr. John Harding of Truckee, CA and Jim Harding of Gold River, CA, and a sister, Madeline Higby of Hurst, TX.

Memorial services are pending. The Colonial Chapel of Franklin & Downs in California is in charge of arrangements.
