Hillis W. Elder, 71, of Oskaloosa, IA died November 3, 2001, in Mercy Hospital Medical Center, Des Moines, IA.

He was born April 14, 1930, in Baring, MO to Clarence Wilbur and Verda Wells Elder.

He married Mary Beth Hudson, February 28, 1953, in Las Cruces, NM. They divorced in 1997, but remained friends until she died September 17, 2001.

A 1948 Baring, MO High School graduate, he served in the U.S. Army Air Corps. In 1958, the couple moved to Oskaloosa, IA and he began Elder's Logging and shared Elder's Tree Service with his late brother, Alvis. In the late 1960s, he also operated the Fina gas station in Oskaloosa, IA. He was a member of the Moose Lodge, the American Legion and the Men's Bowling Association.

Surviving are three daughters, Susan Elder-McGee, Stacey Newell and Hillary Kutcher, all of Oskaloosa, IA; two sons, Shawn and Dell of Oskaloosa, IA; 14 grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; a special friend, Pat Nelson of Oskaloosa, IA; a brother, Wallace of Baring, MO; and two sisters, Hazel Keller of Davenport, IA and Virginia Peterson of Gorin, MO.

He was preceded in death by a daughter, Shari Loudin; and a brother, Alvis on September 4, 2000.

Funeral services were held November 6, 2001, at Bates Funeral Chapel, Oskaloosa, IA, with Rev. Michael Crouch officiating. Cremation followed the service. A memorial has been established to his family.
