Dresden, Gillenwater & Grotz Pick Up Wins Before Rain Ruins Final Two Feature Races

Track promoter Ron Anderson maybe should consider changing the name of his track from the Scotland County Raceway to the S.C. Rainway as yet another Saturday night race was faced with thunderstorms.

But with the ominous sky above, the track crews worked at a rapid pace to get the show in before Mother Nature claimed yet another race.

The late model and A-modified divisions each got both heat races in and the hobby stock division was on its third heat when the rains started.

Tommy Elston won the first heat race before Justin Fuller captured heat race two in just the second outing of his young career in the 66 car.

The A-modified heat wins went to Lynn Monroe in the 21 car and Steve Grotz in the 22G car.

Hobby stock heat race winners were Jeff Soper (43S) and Roger Dresden (1).

Crews worked approximately 45 minutes to get the track back into shape as the drivers pitched in and brought their cars on to the tracks to help pack the wet surface.

The hard work paid off as the hobby stocks took to the track and completed the final heat race followed by two races each for the B-modified and cruiser classes.

The B-modified heats were taken by Charles Baker in the 9 car and Jim Gillenwater in the 10 car. The three cruiser heats were captured by Rick Girard and Nathan Bestine in the 30 car, Jeff Booher and Kenny Cowser in the 32 car, and the 42 car of Brian Overhulser and Sean Verdon.

A good-sized crowd of fans stuck it out through the delay and was treated to some exciting racing led off by the A-modified class. Only nine cars started the feature race but that didn't limit the racing action.

Steve Grotz took advantage of his starting spot on the inside of the front row to jump out to the lead. Jim Fuller moved the 88 car up into second place as he tried to challenge for the lead.

The biggest mover proved to be the 21 car of Lynn Monroe who leapt from his third row starting spot all the way up to challenge for the lead.

Monroe and Mark Burgtorf both got past Fuller as the 88 car slipped out of the grove in turn four and strayed too high. That was just the start of the problems for the 88 car, which went to the pits with a flat tire just a few laps later.

Up to that point when the caution flew, Monroe had been slowly reeling in Grotz, who saw his quarter lap lead evaporate until Monroe had the 21 car right on his bumper.

The restart went to the advantage of the 22 car as Grotz quickly rebuilt his lead and never looked back on his way to the win. Monroe finished second followed by Burgtorf in the 69 car. Jim Roach finished third in the 13 car followed by Bob Dale and the 12 car.

The hobby stock feature race continued to be the private battlegrounds for Tony Becerra and Roger Dresden as the duo waded through the field to go head to head at the front of the pack.

Becerra started on the front row and got his first challenge from fellow pole sitter, the 32 car. The two drivers went side-by-side down the front stretch two laps in a row before Becerra finally got the advantage.

All the while Dresden was picking cars off left and right from his fifth row starting spot. It took just two laps for him to move the 1 car up five spots into fifth position. Jeff Soper followed Dresden's lead and moved the 43s car up five spots as well.

The yellow flag came out on lap four when Larry Hooper's 23 car, which was running third, was forced to the infield.

The restart bunched the front pack of seven cars together and gave the fans plenty to watch.

By the halfway point it was business as usual for the hobby stock feature as Becerra and Dresden were one-two and battling for the top spot. As the white flag came out for the final lap Dresden slipped over the top of Becerra in turn four and went on to the win.

John Oliver Jr. crossed the finish line third in the 05 car followed by Soper and Bill Crowell in the 6 car.

Ten cars took the field for the B-modified feature with Jim Gillenwater riding a streak of three straight wins at SCR. He had the 10 car starting on the fourth row but the front six cars had to be aware of the track's hottest driver.

Jack Evans took his 00 car out to the lead off his front row starting spot. But Jerry Reese had the 02 car right with the leader off the start. Reese has battled car problems much of the early part of the season but looked poised for a strong run as he maintained the pace with Evans.

It only took two laps for Gillenwater to close in on the leaders and move into third place.

Reese saw his luck run out as he spun out in turn four and went to the back of the pack. That cleared the way for Gillenwater to close the gap on Evans and ultimately take the lead.

Turn four proved to be Evans' weak spot as Gillenwater moved past the 00 car before Danny Daggs overtook Evans on the very next lap in the same spot to move the 04 car into second place.

The front runners built a big margin and finished one-two followed by Evans in third. Todd Morton took fourth in the 33J car followed by Phillip Cossell in the 15x car.

The late model division featured one of its largest fields of the year as 12 cars took to the track to do battle.

John Fuller looked like the car to beat as he bolted out of the starting gates and had the 33 car way out in front.

But Fuller's luck left him when the car started sparking as the right rear wheel broke sending the 33 car home for the night.

Tommy Elston took advantage of the car troubles and moved the 45 car into first place. Nick Ingells moved up to second place in the 1 car followed by Dennis Woodworth in the 45DW car.

That's when the rains returned and finally forced the end of racing action for the night.

The late model feature will be completed at the June 23rd races along with the cruiser feature race, providing next Saturday's crowd some extra race action.
