Four-Wide Racing In Late Model Feature Highlights Exciting Night Of Action At SCR

Fans at Scotland County Raceway July 28 quite possibly saw the greatest night of racing action of the 2001 season as a quality field of cars in all five divisions entertained the crowd.

The highlight of the night proved to be the late model feature race, which treated the crowd to an unbelievable run for the checkered flag.

It was smooth sailing for the 7 car early on as he jumped out to the lead from his front row starting spot. He lost his first challenger when Jody Wood and the 51 car went to the infield after just one lap allowing Jon Fuller to move the 33 car into second place followed by Jason Krigbaum in the 11 car in third.

Denny Woodworth made the first push up the pack as he moved the 45DW car into fourth place from his fourth row starting spot. Chris Smyser and Tommy Elston started side by side on row five and stayed close to each other as they moved up toward the front of the pack.

The 7 car maintained a firm grasp on the lead while the battle was for the remainder of the top five spots. Woodworth moved up into second place as he got around Krigbaum on the bottom of turn four at the halfway point.

Elston was the next to make his move as Smyser got in tow and the duo passed the 11 car to take third and fourth position.

That's when the real excitement began. One lap later the top four cars came out of turn four into the front stretch. Woodworth was trying to make a move low. However Smyser slipped in beneath him to make it three cars wide right in front of the grandstands.

To the crowd's amazement Elston squeezed the 45 car into the middle of the group and the cars went four wide down the straight-away, through turns one and two and finally out into the back stretch where Smyser took the lead.

When the cars dropped back into line from the rare feet it was Smyser in first followed by Elston, Woodworth and the 7 car.

That's the way it stayed until there was just one lap to go. Elston got underneath Smyser in turns three and four to pull ahead and take the white flag.

Smyser tried to make a move in the final turn and actually pulled ahead through the corner before Elston regained the momentum off the top and raced to the checkered flag.

Smyser finished second followed by Woodworth. Krigbaum finished in fourth place followed by Justin Fuller in fifth.

A new face found its way to the winners' circle in the A-modified feature event as Jim Roach won his first event at SCR. He piloted the green and white 13 car to the win despite some rough going early on.

Roach and Bob Dale hit hard in turn four early in the race, but both cars bounced apart and looked none the worse for ware.

Last week's winner Jim Fuller looked headed for another win early on. He had the 88 car out to a large lead by the finish of the second circuit.

After the 27 car spun in turn four bringing out the race's second yellow flag, the restart gave the race a new look.

Fuller held on to the lead but Roach got a good jump and was able to move up into third place past Tony Fraise and Kevin Cale.

Roach and Fraise had a battle for second while Fuller continued to build his lead while Cale fell off into fourth.

When Fuller went too high in turn four Roach made his move and took over the lead.

Fraise made the same move one lap later and took over second place but with just one lap left he was unable to make a charge at Roach. Fuller finished third followed by Dale in the 12 car. Mike Karhoff finished fifth in the 4K car.

It was smooth sailing following the relatively tame A-Mod feature. The hobby stocks, B-modifieds and late models all followed with caution free events as the track featured three events run wire-to-wire green.

Roger Dresden is getting to be a familiar face to fans at SCR as the Keokuk, IA driver won for the third straight week in the hobby stock division.

It took Dresden just three laps to move from the third row up to the front as he passed Jeff Soper in the 43s car to take the lead.

Dresden quickly pulled away from the rest of the field as did Soper who easily took second place.

The real action came in the third place position where Tony Becerra (2), J.R. Miller (3M) and Bobby McCartney (1M) each held the position for some time in the race.

Ultimately it was Becerra who took third followed by Miller and McCartney.

The B-modified feature saw a similar story unwind. Chris Larson joined his fellow Keokuk, IA driver in the winner's circle as he led the feature race wire-to-wire for the win.

After picking up the heat race Larson opened the race on the pole and never was challenged as he found his way back to victory lane after a long absence.

The 67 car built a huge cushion in the first half of the race before Jim Gillenwater began to shrink the gap as his 10 car moved up. He was followed by Jack Evans, Jr. in the 00 car. After two straight wins at SCR Evans, Jr. had to settle for third place.

The final lap made for an exciting finish as the top two cars got into lapped traffic in the final turn. Larson made a hard push for the checkered flag and created a little concern for his crew as the car belched a line of black smoke down the front stretch before cooling down in the winner's circle.

Gillenwater took second followed by Evans, Jr. in third. Kelly Smith was fourth in the 41 car followed by Danny Daggs in the 04 car.

In what proved to be the final run for the two-man cruiser class at SCR, Steve Anderson and Danny Buford passed the 44H car with just two laps to go en route to the victory. The two cars were neck and neck in the final lap before the 70 car took the final advantage.

However the car was disqualified and for the second straight week Brad and PJ Hudson won by default with the 44H car which finished second in the race.

Second place went to the 04 car piloted by R. Torias and J. Lieurance of Quincy, IL. D. Skow and J. Skow finished third in the 38E car.

The feature marked the final race for the class at SCR. The class has been canceled and will be replaced with a stock car division beginning next week.
