Knox County Keeps Lady Tigers Winless In Conference With 1-0 Defeat

Coach Dick Robinson could have been a fortuneteller. The Scotland County R-I softball coach was the featured speaker at the Scotland County Rotary Club lunch meeting September 11. He discussed the 2001 softball team as well as that night's scheduled game against Knox County.

"We both have excellent pitching so I expect a 1-0 game," Robinson told the gathering.

Robinson's prediction came true but unfortunately for SCR-I fans, the Lady Tigers were on the wrong end of the 1-0 loss.

The two teams played through three innings with no score. SCR-I had several scoring chances early on. The Lady Tigers had runners on second and third in the first inning but could not score. In the second frame Rebecca Consbrock singled and designated hitter Valerie Crawford walked to give SCR-I a pair of base runners for the second straight inning. But the Lady Tigers again stranded the runners.

The last chance came in the fourth inning when Brandi Mallett singled. Courtesy runner Katie Schneider stole second base but could move no further.

Knox County broke through in the fourth inning. The inning opened with an error that put a runner on second base. When Knox County laid down the bunt, third baseman Jessie Cotton fielded the ball and faked the throw to first. That was enough to catch the runner on second base in a run down. She was tagged out, but the batter advanced to second base on the play. The next batter stroked a single to plate the game's lone run.

After a leadoff walk in the fifth inning, the Lady Tigers went down in order for the final nine outs.

Sara Eggleston took the pitching loss despite allowing just the one run. She gave up nine hits and did not walk a batter while striking out four.

Mallett and Consbrock had the lone hits for SCR-I. The Lady Tigers dropped to 0-2 in conference play and 2-6 overall on the season.

The Monday, September 17 contest at Brookfield was rained out and rescheduled for September 19. The Lady Tigers will play three scheduled games, Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday as well as possibly three more games during the Schuyler County Tournament September 22.
