SCR-I Softball Squad Drops Pair Of Games In Final At Bats

The Scotland County softball team saw a victory slip away in the seventh inning and dropped a notch in the league standing in the process as Milan rallied for four runs in its final at bat to defeat SCR-I 7-6 September 26 in the second game of a double header.

That was immediately after Brookfield had scored one run in the seventh inning to beat SCR-I 2-1 in the opening game of the night.

The games were played back-to-back in Milan after both were rained out the previous week.

The Lady Tigers took a 1-0 lead over Brookfield in the top of the first inning. Jessie Cotton singled and came all the way around to score on a hit by Sara Eggleston.

Brookfield tied the game in the bottom of the frame on a pair of two-out hits, including a key triple by the clean up hitter.

The two teams went scoreless for the next five frames before Brookfield scored the winning run in the bottom of the seventh inning with two outs. The runner reached on an error and got into scoring position on a passed ball before scoring on a single.

Eggleston took the hard luck loss despite giving up just one earned run. She allowed just four hits and two walks while striking out five. She also had two of the four SCR-I hits.

After a slow start in game two, Scotland County looked like it had the upper hand on the Wildcats. Milan led 2-0 in the second inning before Eggleston tripled and then stole home to cut the deficit to one.

The Lady Tigers exploded for four tallies in the fourth inning. Meagan Fromm singled to start the rally. After Brandi Mallett was hit by a pitch, Valerie Crawford singled to load the bases. Faith Woods chased home all three runs with a base knock. She then came around to score when Andrea Kirkpatrick reached base on an error.

Milan took the wind out of the Lady Tigers sails in the top of the seventh inning with four unearned runs. SCR-I committed three errors that kept the inning alive and allowed Milan to rally for a 7-5 lead.

SCR-I had one final chance. Jessie Cotton reached on an error and stole second base. She scored to cut the deficit to 7-6 but SCR-I could not get the tying run on base and fell to defeat.
