Lady Tigers Season Opener Spoiled by Third Quarter Rocket Rally

The season opener for the Scotland County Lady Tigers was a game of two halves that ended up with SCR-I on the wrong end of a 59-40 loss to Eddyville/ Blakesburg in the opener of the Davis County Invitational November 19.

SCR-I opened the game with a strong run after getting over the initial jitters. After falling behind 3-0 Brenna Cook hit a jumper from the wing for the first points of the year for the Lady Tigers. Sara Norton followed that up with a score on an offensive rebound yet the Rockets still led 8-4.

That's when Meagan Fromm took over. Despite constant double teams, the junior forward got on the scoreboard with hard work. She scored on back-to-back offensive rebounds to get things rolling. Fromm then nailed a pair of jumpers from the baseline to make it eight straight points and give the Lady Tigers a 12-8 lead to finish the first half.

Scotland County did most of this damage with the Rockets top scorer, Nichole Lorenzen, on the bench in foul trouble with just two points. She sat the entire second period.

The Lady Tigers took advantage of the opportunity, outscoring EB 14-2 in the second frame to take what appeared to be a commanding 26-10 lead.

The period started with Jessie Cotton and Amy Blomme hitting three pointers. The scoring was slowed a bit by some poor shooting from the charity stripe as SCR-I missed three straight, including a pair of front ends on the 1-and-1.

Fromm scored four straight points before Brandi Mallett scored inside on a nice pass from Valerie Crawford. Norton closed out the run with a free throw to send SCR-I to the locker room on top.

The tides completely turned in the third period. Eddyville/ Blakesburg went on a 27-8 run in the third period fueled by Lorenzen who had 15 points in the period. Just as importantly the senior post player also led the Rockets press that totally disrupted Scotland County. The Lady Tigers showed their youth and inexperience as they were unable to adjust to the press and let the game slip away with turnovers and poor passing.

Fromm put up six points for SCR-I but picked up her fourth fall midway through the quarter and was forced to the bench. The lone other score came from Mallett on the interior but the Rockets pulled ahead 35-34 with 1:07 left in the quarter.

The game continued down hill from there as the Rockets rode the press to several more turnovers and quickly built a 10-point cushion. A good shooting first half quickly disappeared in the second half as SCR-I could not buy a basket.

The Lady Tigers got the lone field goal of the fourth quarter from Norton on an offensive rebound. The offensive slowdown was completed when Fromm fouled out with 2:14 left to play.

Meanwhile Lorenzen kept racking up the points on her way to a game-high 30 points (28 came in the second half).

Scotland County got a pair of free throws from Norton as well as one each from Cotton and Crawford to make the final score 59-40.

Fromm led SCR-I with 18 points and had a solid game on the glass as well. Norton finished with seven points thanks to hard work on the offensive glass. Mallett finished with five points while Cotton added four.
