Trio Of Double-Digit Scorers Pace Lady Tigers To Win Over LaPlata

For the first time this season the Scotland County Lady Tigers had three scorers in double digits, and for the first time this season the team has won back-to-back games. Coincidence? Not if you ask coach Andrea Dabney who stated early in the season that the team needed a couple of girls to step up to join Meagan Fromm, the team's leading scorer, to get the squad over the 40-point level on a consistent basis.

Amy Blomme and Sara Norton answered the call as they combined for 23 points in a 48-37 win over LaPlata December 6 in Memphis.

Fromm carried much of the load early on. She opened the game with a basket inside. Blomme followed that up with a driving score before a jumper by Jessie Cotton quickly made the score 6-0. After a trio of free throws from SCR-I made the score 9-2 the shooting cooled off for SCR-I. With the score 9-6 Fromm closed the period with a driving bucket to give her team an 11-6 lead at the end of the first quarter.

Scotland County went bombs away to open the second period. Fromm started the onslaught with a three pointer. Blomme drilled another triple before Fromm added her second long ball to push the margin to double digits at 22-12.

After another score by Fromm LaPlata switched to the triangle-and-two defense, putting two defenders man-to-man on Fromm with the three remaining defenders playing a triangle shaped zone.

The move slowed the SCR-I offense a bit but Fromm took the ball to the baseline past a trio of defenders and then hit Norton with a nice pass for the easy score. That gave the Lady Tigers a 28-16 lead at half time.

LaPlata came out in the third period trying to shut down Fromm. What the Bulldogs did not count on was the rest of the team stepping up like it did.

Fromm was held to just one score in the third period but that didn't keep SCR-I from maintaining a 40-33 lead. Blomme hit a three pointer to open the quarter. Cotton drilled a jumper from the top of the key and Valerie Crawford then hit from the corner before Blomme hit a jumper from the base line. The lead would have stayed at double digits but SCR-I could only convert one of five free throw attempts in the period.

Blomme got things started again in the fourth period as she sank her third three pointer of the night. Norton followed that up with a three point play the old fashioned way to make the score 46-35.

SCR-I then pulled the ball out and forced LaPlata to come out of the zone defense but not before the Lady Tigers moved the ball around to run more than a minute of precious time off the clock.

LaPlata went to man-to-man defense but it did not work as Crawford quickly scored inside on a nice pass from Cotton to make the score 48-37 with 3:12 left to play.

That proved to be the final score for Scotland County but the defense did the job on the other end, keeping LaPlata scoreless over that period as well.

Fromm finished with 16 points to pace Scotland County. Blomme had a season high 13 points and Norton was in double digits for the second straight game with 10 points.

SCR-I improves to 2-3 on the year and will host Knox County December 14 in Memphis in the next varsity action.
