Citizens For 63 Now Will Ask For Cent Sales Tax In Kirksville

Kirksville citizens supporting the expansion of U.S. Highway 63 from two to four lanes from Macon to Kirksville have formed the Citizens for 63 Now Committee. The committee's purpose is to support a half-cent sales tax to fund the project's local match negotiated by the Highway 63 Transportation Corporation and the Missouri Highway and Transportation Commission.

The Highway 63 Trans-portation Corporation was officially recognized by MoDOT in April of 2000. The corporation comprises representatives of Adair, Macon and Schuyler counties and the cities of Kirksville, LaPlata, Atlanta and Macon. It operates under the sole goal of accelerating the expansion of Highway 63 between Macon and Kirksville.

MoDOT has approved the corporation's proposal to raise $11 million to fund approximately 30 percent of the cost for the four-lane project. MoDOT will fund the remaining cost of $38.1 million for the job.

The Citizens for 63 Now Committee is conducting a grassroots campaign to support the initiative with the main goal the passage of the cent sales tax. In Kirksville the initiative plans to explain to voters that the proposal would not mean a tax increase. Instead they will campaign for the initiative explaining that the move will only mean a continuance of the same taxes because an existing cent sales tax that was used to fund the construction of the Kirksville Aquatic Center is scheduled to end in April of 2002.
