Trial Set For March For Clark County Sheriff Doug Jones

Constituents of Clark County will have to wait a little longer to learn the fate of their sheriff who faces deer hunting charges in Scotland County, which will go to trial March 11.

Clark County Sheriff Doug Jones was ticketed November 13 in Scotland County for alleged deer hunting violations. He was scheduled to appear before Judge Karl DeMarce November 27 but the case was delayed by the sheriff's request for a change of judge. That change order was delivered December 5, appointing Judge Gary Wallace of Shelby County to hear the case.

Jones appeared in the Scotland County Associate Circuit Court January 3 and entered pleas of not guilty on three misdemeanor charges: attempting to take a deer with the aid of an artificial light; attempting to take a deer from a public roadway; and attempting to take a deer from a motor vehicle.

To meet the schedules of Jones's attorney Rick Roberts and Scotland County Prosecuting Attorney Susan Henry, the court date could not be set in February and was instead pushed to Monday, March 11. Pretrial matters will be taken up at 8:30 a.m. with the actual trial set to start at 9:00 a.m.

The case has been set for a bench trial as agreed upon by the defendant, but Judge Wallace did note that Jones could still request a jury trial by filing a written request with the court at least 30 days prior to the date.
