Firemen Douse Pair Of Blazes Over Weekend

The Scotland County Fire Department responded to a pair of calls during the final three days of June.

At approximately 3:30 p.m. Friday, June 28 the fire department was dispatched to a hay bale fire on Highway 15 north of Memphis. A load of large bales had caught fire while being transported by trailer to the Scotland County Livestock Auction.

The fire was quickly brought under control but the load as well as the trailer, were destroyed by the blaze. A nearby power pole was also damaged by the fire. The department was on the scene for approximately three hours. Traffic was limited to one lane on Highway 15 during the incident.

The second fire occurred Saturday, June 29 at 10:27 a.m. in the east end of the Gas & More parking lot in Memphis where a vehicle had caught fire. The blaze poised an interesting dilemma as it was adjacent to the fireworks stand at the site.

The fire was quickly extinguished preventing any real threat to the adjoining property. The fire department was on the scene for approximately 15 minutes.
