Lodewegen, Nicoli Win In Primary

Only three races with opposition did not stop a strong voter turnout in Scotland County for the August 6 primary election. More than 1,400 voters went to the polls Tuesday where a Democratic incumbent was defeated while the Republican incumbent was re-elected.

Former prosecutor Kimbery J. Nicoli soundly defeated incumbent Susan Henry on the Democratic ticket. Nicoli received 668 votes to 226 cast for Henry. Chris Harris was elected as Jefferson Township Committeeman for the Democratic party defeating Junior Snodgrass by a vote of 331 to 241.

On the Republican ballot it was County Clerk Betty Lodewegen retaining her office. She received 291 votes to 185 for challenger Cindy (Varnold) Graber.

Both state propositions requesting tax increase were soundly defeated in Scotland County. Local voters opposed Proposition B, the new transportation funding sales and fuel taxes, by nearly 2 to 1. A total of 908 no votes were cast with only 495 yes votes received.

Proposition A faired even worse. The tax proposal to create 911 cellular phone service received only 383 yes votes to 990 no votes.
