Memphis Woman Recovering After Crash On Icy Road

Icy road conditions were the cause of a single-vehicle accident December 11 at 7:20 a.m. that left a Memphis woman with serious injuries.

According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, Kristal L. Phillips, 21, was southbound on Highway 15, three miles south of Memphis when she lost control of her 2002 Jeep on a slick section of roadway.

According to the report, the accident occurred when Phillips attempted to pass another southbound vehicle. She lost control of the car on the ice and skidded off the south side of the roadway where the Jeep went down a steep embankment and through a fence before overturning several times. Phillips was not wearing her seatbelt and was ejected from the vehicle.

She suffered serious injuries in the crash and was transported by Scotland County Ambulance to Scotland County Memorial Hospital. Because of foggy conditions a helicopter could not land at SCMH so she was taken by ambulance and en route to Columbia Phillips was transferred to an air ambulance in Queen City and flown to University Hospital in Columbia.

The Patrol was assisted at the scene by the ambulance service, the Scotland County Rescue Squad and the Scotland County Sheriff's Department.

According to family members, Phillips suffered head and facial injuries, partially collapsed lungs and had to have her spleen removed. However she did not have any broken bones. She remains in the ICU unit at University Hospital but a complete recovery is expected.
