James Coogan Janssen, 88, of Rutledge, MO, passed away March 29, 2002, in the Northeast Regional Medical Center in Kirksville, MO.

The son of Conrad P. and Elizabeth Jane Coogan Janssen, he was born October 3, 1913, at Lincoln, IL.

On March 20, 1934, at Lincoln, IL, he was united in marriage to Annetta Ernestine Groth and she preceded him in death on January 30, 2000.

He is survived by a son, James Conrad Janssen and his wife, Barbara of Spanaway, WA; two daughters, Phyllis Garvey and her husband, Willard of Mount Pulaski, IL, and Beverly Ann Dieterich and her husband, Kenneth of Arbela, MO; seven grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; one step-great-great-grandchild; and several nieces and nephews.

Preceding him in death were his parents; one grandson, James Dale Janssen; two brothers, William Janssen and Phillip Coogan; and one sister, Sister Mary Janele Janssen.

Mr. Janssen was raised in Lincoln IL, by his paternal grandparents after the death of his parents.

He was employed at the American Distillery of Pekin, IL, about four years. Mr. and Mrs. Janssen were engaged in farming in the Kenney, IL, community for 17 years and later moved to the Rutledge community and farmed east of Rutledge, MO, until their retirement in 1978.

He served on the Chestnut, IL School Board for 10 years. He was a 50-year member of the Royal Arch Masonic Lodge and also a member of the Chapter, Commandery and Council at Mt. Pulaski, IL.

Mr. Janssen was of the Methodist faith. He enjoyed the outdoors, hunting and spending time with his family and friends.

Graveside services were held April 1, 2002, at the Green Hill Cemetery at San Jose, IL. Masonic services were conducted by Rutledge Lodge #572 on March 31, 2002, in the Hudson-Rimer Funeral Chapel, Edina, MO.
