Edward A. Slayton, 76, of Downing, MO, died April 27, 2002, in the Iowa Methodist Medical Center at Des Moines, IA.

He was born January 17, 1926, near Elmwood, IL, to William Joseph and Susie Merle Goold Slayton.

He married Ruth Esther Lowe on July 8, 1950, at Peoria, IL. To this union four children were born, Tim, Tina, Joan and Joe.

Edward served in the U.S. Army during World War II. He was a member of the American Legion Post 1000.

On December 31, 1986, he married Jan A. Hendricker at Downing, MO.

Edward was a farmer all of his life and also raised Angus livestock. He was a member of the Barker United Methodist Church.

Survivors include his wife, Jan of the home; his children, Tim Slayton and wife, Barbie of Downing, MO, Tina Vangilder and husband, Larry of Columbia, MO, Joan Morris and husband, Steve of Memphis, MO, and Joe Slayton and wife, Melanie of Memphis, MO; two step-children, Kathy Riebel of Blue Springs, MO and Lee Riebel of Norfolk, VA, serving with the U.S. Navy; seven grandchildren, Seth, Ryan, Nicholas, Trevor and Adam Slayton, Jesse Vangilder and Shaina Vangilder; three brothers, Clifford and wife, Marie of LaHarpe, IL, Merle of Pikeville, TN, and Richard and wife, Shirley of Yates City, IL; two sisters, Ruth Ewan and husband, Bill of Peoria, IL, and Mary Sue Howell of Kenosha, WI.

He was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers, Robert and David.

Funeral services will be held Wednesday, May 1, 2002, at 1:00 p.m. in the Memphis United Methodist Church in Memphis, MO with the Rev. Carol Blackwell officiating. Organist will be Joan Goosey with vocalist, Wesley Hendricker. Full military rites will be conducted at the graveside by the Wallace W. Gillespie Post #4958 of VFW. Burial will follow in the Brock Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the Brock Cemetery or Leukemia-Lymphoma Society. Memphis Funeral Home, Memphis, MO, was in charge of arrangements.
