Howard Stanley Johnston, 72, of Bremerton, WA, died of cancer on November 23, 2002.

He was born June 5, 1930 in Rutledge, MO to Homer E. and Nellie Rae (Sallee) Johnston. He graduated from Rutledge Senior High School, Rutledge, MO.

Mr. Johnston served in the U.S. Navy from 1948 to 1949 and again from 1952 to 1953 achieving the rank of BT3 and was awarded the National Defense Medal and Good Conduct Medals for his service.

He married Jo Ann Richey in Inglewood, CA and Howard retired in 1992 after working more than 38 years for Rockwell International.

Recently he spent three years as a greeter for Wal-Mart in Bremerton. He especially enjoyed working with wood, playing guitar and singing in a western band.

Survivors include his wife, JoAnn; a son, Stanley William E. Johnston of California; a daughter, Robin Kathleen Cantwell of Poulsbo, WA; three sisters, Lucille Hutson of Mt. Pleasant, IA, Dorothy Bettinghouse of Lebenon, MO, and Naomi Chandler of Illinois; and four grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by five brothers, Melvin, Cecil, Arlis, Irvin and Ivan; and one sister, Irene Bittikofer.

No services are being held locally and inurnment will take place at a later date in Rutledge, MO.
