Youth Hunt Bags 31 Turkeys In Scotland County

The weather was nearly perfect and the birds worked well for the area turkey hunters who took advantage of the special youth turkey hunt April 13-14.

Missouri Department of Conservation Agent Gary Miller reported 31 turkeys were checked over the two-day event for young hunters. Of that total, 28 were adult birds, with only two jakes and one bearded hen being taken. That was down from 35 turkeys taken during last year's youth hunt.

"Most importantly there were zero hunting accidents," Miller said "We had a couple days of safe hunting and the kids had some success so we're happy."

Missouri was up nearly 600 birds from the 2001 totals, harvesting 3,102 turkeys. The northeast district followed the trend, increasing by 84 birds to 423 in 2002. Lincoln County posted the high of 49 turkeys followed by Adair County with 37, Pike County with 36 then Scotland County with 31.
