Lady Tigers Prevail In 11th Inning To Win Softball Season Opener

Katie Schneider looks for the pitch during SCR-I softball action which opened last week with a pair of victories for the Lady Tigers.

The season opener is often stressful enough for a first-year coach, but SCR-I mentor Terri Slaughter got the royal treatment August 29 when Scotland County opened the season against Brashear with an 11-inning 5-4 victory in front of the home crowd in Memphis.

"I was worried enough about everything else going into our first game, then we end up playing 11 innings so needless to say my nerves were all little worn out at the end of the day," Slaughter said. "Of course the win made it a lot easier to deal with."

The Lady Tigers showed some first game jitters in the third frame. Sara Eggleston coasted through the first two frames, striking out five of the first six batters. But with two outs in the third inning a key error on the SCR-I defense left the door open and Brashear took advantage of it scoring four unearned runs.

SCR-I trimmed the deficit to 4-2 with a couple scores in the bottom of the fourth. Another run was plated in the fifth before SCR-I tied the contest at 4-4 in the sixth.

That's where the score remained for four innings thanks in large part to Eggleston who allowed just two base runners after the fourth frame, a span of seven innings.

Scotland County ended the contest in the bottom of the 11th inning. Becky Miller started the rally with a leadoff single. Amy Blomme followed with a hit before Jessie Cotton delivered the game winning RBI with the team's third straight single.

The Lady Tigers offense had a good start to the season. Valerie Crawford was 3-5 with two runs scored to lead the attack. Eggleston was 2-5 with a double and two RBI. Cotton and Meagan Fromm both were 2-5 with an RBI. Brandi Mallett went 1-4 with a run batted in while Miller was 2-4. Amy Morgan and Katie Schneider both were 1-2 splitting time in leftfield, giving SCR-I a hit from eight of the nine spots in the batting order.

Eggleston pitched all 11 innings for SCR-I. She gave up just four hits and two walks while striking out 12 to pick up the victory.
