Softball Team Completes Perfect Home Season

The Scotland County Tigers completed two streaks in impressive fashion with a 4-3 win over Putnam County in the final game of the regular season October 8.

Scotland County rallied for two runs in the bottom of the 11th inning to beat Putnam County 4-3. It marked the third time the girls had prevailed in 11 innings this year. The victory also secured a perfect home season for SCR-I. The Lady Tigers were 7-0 in front of the Memphis crowd at the SCR-I field.

The Midgets opened a 1-0 lead in the third inning. Scotland County tied the game 1-1 in the fifth. Jessie Cotton reached on an error and scored on a sacrifice by Amy Morgan.

That's where the score stayed at the end of regulation. Putnam County looked poised to take the win with a run in the top of the ninth. But SCR-I responded with a run to keep the game going. Meagan Fromm singled and moved to second on a sacrifice by Jenna Shalley. After moving to third on a groundout the senior scored on a passed ball by the catcher to even the score at 2-2.

In the top of the 11th Putnam County tallied a run to pull ahead 3-2. SCR-I once again answered the challenge. Shalley reached on an error. Another fielding miscue gave SCR-I runners at first and second as Brandi Mallett reached base. Coach Terri Slaughter went to the bench for a pair of runners calling on Jamie Fuller and Kate Schneider for some extra speed. The move paid off as both runners moved up a base on a passed ball. Cotton hit a ball to the shortstop and the throw got away from the Putnam County first baseman allowing both runs to score giving SCR-I the 4-3 win.

Pitcher Sara Eggleston went all 11 innings for the Lady Tigers. She struck out 14 while walking just two to pick up the victory.

The victory allowed SCR-I to end the year with a 14-5 mark in the regular season.
