Lady Tigers Open Season With Overtime Victory Over Hannibal

With archrivals Putnam County and Clark County moving up to Class 3 the Lady Tigers have rid themselves of two of the toughest teams in the former district. But even as a MSHSAA Class 2 team Scotland County proved it can compete with these bigger schools.

The message was sent loud and clear when the Lady Tigers jumped up two levels to take on Class 4 Hannibal in the season opener November 26 in Memphis.

After building big leads on two separate occasions it took a last second shot by SCR-I to force overtime where the Lady Tigers prevailed 56-54.

Scotland County jumped out to a 17-10 lead in the first period. Freshman Ali Fromm sparked the team in the first varsity game of her career. She was a perfect three for three from behind the three point arc as the Lady Tigers looked to bombard Hannibal from three-point range.

The perimeter shooting cooled down for the Lady Tigers in the second period and Hannibal battled back to take the lead 20-19. A basket by Jessie Cotton gave her team the lead back. A pair of free throws by Meagan Fromm put SCR-I ahead 24-20 at halftime.

Ali Fromm started the second half like she did the first. The freshman made a three point play the old fashioned way, scoring on a rebounding and then adding the free throw. She followed that up with a jumper from the top of the key to help hold off a Hannibal run and keep her team ahead by one.

SCR-I made a key run midway through the third period. Jennifer Crawford started the run with a bucket off an offensive rebound. Meagan Fromm then hit back-to-back buckets in the paint. Cotton followed that up with a basket inside on a nice pass from Valerie Crawford and Scotland County led 37-29 with 3:42 left in the third period.

Meagan Fromm maintained the big lead drilling a three pointer and adding another score in the paint as Scotland County led 42-33 at the end of three quarters.

The advantage quickly disappeared to start the fourth period as the Scotland County offense went cold. Hannibal took advantage as the Lady Pirates pulled within three points with 6:19 to play.

SCR-I finally got on the board courtesy of a basket from Meagan Fromm. Cotton followed that up with a steal and took it coast to coast for the score to put the Lady Tigers on top by seven.

But Hannibal battled back and pulled within one point at the 4:03 mark. A basket by Brandi Mallett stopped the run momentarily but Hannibal then took its first lead of the contest since early in the first half. That forced a Scotland County timeout with 2:04 to play.

But the score remained 49-48 in favor of Hannibal as time wound down on the contest. SCR-I fouled with 17 seconds left and Hannibal made one of two free throws to pull ahead by two points.

But Scotland County's all-stater, Meagan Fromm took charge down the stretch. She drove the length of the court and with just two ticks left on the clock scored in the paint to send the game into overtime.

Scotland County never trailed in the overtime. Meagan Fromm scored to open the extended play. After Hannibal tied the game Ali Fromm scored on a drive to the basket. Cotton then scored what proved to be the winning bucket on a nice pass from Amy Blomme to give the Lady Tigers the 56-54 win.

Meagan Fromm had 22 points to lead the Tigers. Ali Fromm added 16 and Cotton finished with 14. Dominique Williams led Hannibal with 19 points.
