Lady Tigers Rebound To Defeat Brookfield In Second Round Of Tourney

The Scotland County Lady Tigers shrugged off a 20-point loss to Milan in the opening round of the Putnam County and came back two nights later to beat Brookfield 50-40 to advance to the third place trophy game.

SCR-I knocked off the Lady Dogs, who had beaten Milan 40-33 in the first game of the event December 9. The points margin allowed the Lady Tigers to advance to the third place game in the complicated pool play formula. All three teams in the pool, Milan, SCR-I and Brookfield, finished their round robin portion of the tournament with 1-1 records. The tie was broken by the victory margins of each game.

Scotland County rebounded from the tough loss early in the tourney to down Brookfield in a game of runs.

The Lady Tigers jumped on top 13-4 early in the first period. Meagan Fromm opened the game with a three pointer. Ali Fromm added a three followed by another shot from behind the arc from Jessie Cotton. Meagan Fromm then added a conventional three-point play and another free throw to help build the lead.

Brookfield battled back and pulled within one point to end the first period. The Lady Dogs tied the game 13-13 to open the second period but were unable to get any further as Brookfield never held a lead in the game.

A three point play by Ali Fromm created a little breathing room for SCR-I. The two teams then went more than five minutes without a score.

A jumper by Jessie Cotton finally got the scoreboard moving as SCR-I led 18-13 with 2:39 to play in the first half.

Brookfield ripped off the next five straight points to once again tie the game. A three pointer by Amy Blomme helped SCR-I take a 21-20 lead at the intermission.

Scotland County looked poised to blow the game open in the third quarter. The Lady Tigers went inside for the bulk of the scoring on the key run. Ali Fromm scored in the paint of the inbounds play. Brandi Mallett followed that up with a basket inside before Ali scored on the baseline off a nice pass from Blomme to make the score 28-20. A three pointer by Ali Fromm made the score 31-20.

Brookfield finally got on the board with a basket with 2:56 left in the third period. They didn't stop there. After a three point play by Meagan Fromm, the Lady Dogs went on a 7-0 run to end the third period down just 34-29.

Fouls became a problem for Scotland County in the fourth period on both offense and defense. Meagan Fromm went to the bench with four fouls with more than six minutes to play in the game. On the other end, SCR-I struggled from the free throw line (going 4-10 at one point) leaving the door open for a Brookfield rally.

That rally never materialized as Blomme poured in seven points in the first three minutes of the period to help put her team up by double digits again. Ali Fromm was the lone bright spot at the free throw line as she made four of five from the charity stripe to help turn the 10-point lead into a 50-40 victory.

Ali Fromm led the Scotland County offense with 17 points on the night. Meagan Fromm finished with 12 points and Blomme had a season-high 10 points in the win. Jessie Cotton contributed with eight points to give the team a balanced scoring attack.
