Sixth Seed Milan Upsets Lady Tigers In Tourney Opener

Milan did not look like the sixth seeded team in the Putnam County Tournament as the Lady Wildcats jumped out to a 23-10 first quarter lead that sent Scotland County to the opening round loss December 10.

Baskets by Ali Fromm and Brandi Mallett started the first quarter well for Scotland County before Milan went on a 7-0 run to lead 11-4 and force a SCR-I timeout. The stoppage helped as the Lady Tigers battled back. Amy Blomme hit a jumper and Meagan Fromm scored on a drive to the basket to pull the team within three points.

But Milan closed out the first quarter on an 8-0 run to build the commanding lead.

The Wildcats did not stop there and continued on the hot streak outscoring SCR-I 16-12 in the second period to add to the advantage, leading 39-22 at halftime.

The two teams traded baskets in the third period. Milan started the scoring and went up by 23 points at one point before a basket by Rebecca Consbrock. The Fromm sisters then combined for eight points in a spurt by SCR-I that cut the deficit to 52-36 to end the third period.

The Lady Tigers battled back to striking distance to start the fourth period. Ali Fromm scored on a drive to the basket. A bucket by Valerie Crawford with 5:32 had SCR-I within 12 points and forced a Milan timeout.

The strategy worked as it stalled the Tigers momentum. Milan responded with an 11-1 run down the stretch. The Wildcats defense held SCR-I to just three points in the final five minutes of the game securing the 63-43 victory.

Ali Fromm led Scotland County with 14 points. Meagan Fromm finished with 13 points and Jessie Cotton added six points. Rebecca Van Soest led Milan with 20 points.

The loss dropped Scotland County's record to 2-2 on the year.
