Driver Seriously Hurt After Falling Asleep At Wheel

A Memphis man suffered serious injuries in a one-vehicle accident on Highway 136, four miles west of Memphis at 11:45 p.m. January 3.

According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, Kevin A. Goosey, 39, was eastbound in a 1994 GMC Van when he reportedly fell asleep at the wheel. The van ran off the right side of the roadway where it struck a tree.

The Scotland County Fire and Rescue Squad used the Jaws of Life to remove the driver's side door of the vehicle. The emergency workers also had to use rescue equipment to clear the dashboard and the steering wheel to allow ambulance workers to extricate the victim from the vehicle.

Goosey was taken by Scotland County Ambulance to Scotland County Memorial Hospital and was then taken by Air Evac helicopter to University Hospital in Columbia.

The Patrol was assisted at the scene by the rescue squad, ambulance service and the Scotland County Sheriff's Department. Arrests are pending.
