Crash Numbers Up Across Northeast Missouri In 2002

The Missouri State Highway Patrol reported an increase in traffic accidents investigated by the law enforcement agency and Scotland County played its part in the increase.

Fifty-three of the 2,261 accidents reported in the 16-county Troop B coverage area in 2002 occurred in Scotland County. That was an increase from 2001 for both the county and for Troop B. Scotland County accident totals went up from 48 to 53, while the overall totals went up by 246 from the 2001 final tally of 2,015.

While the overall numbers were up in Troop B, fatalities were on the decline. Forty-three motorists lost their lives in accidents across the 16-county region. That was down from 52 during 2001. Scotland County had one fatal accident in 2002 after recording the deaths of two motorists the previous year.

Scotland County recorded 35 persons injured in car accidents during the 12-month recording period ending December 2002. That represented the second lowest total for Troop B, ahead of only Putnam County's total of 32.

Scotland County had the lowest number of accidents investigated by the Highway Patrol for the entire region. Putnam County was the next on the list with 62 accidents followed by Knox County with 65 and Schuyler County with 67. Randolph County topped Troop B with 296 traffic accidents investigated by the Patrol. Macon County had 268 followed by Marion County with 258.

Macon County led Troop B with seven fatalities in 2002. Clark and Knox counties were the lone two counties without a fatality in 2002.
