Gorin R-III Classified Accredited By MSIP Review

Gorin R-III School District has been notified that "By action of the State Board of Education (on February 20, 2003), the Gorin R-III (E) School District is classified under the third cycle of the Missouri School Improvement Program as Accredited."

The Missouri School Improvement Program (MSIP) review took place on October 29-30, 2002, at the school. A team of examiners from various aspects of education visited the school to collect data from a variety of sources to arrive at a classification of accredited, provisionally accredited, or unaccredited. While the State Board and the Department of Education have a legal mandate to evaluate and classify public schools, the goal of the MSIP process is to promote school improvement within each district and on a statewide basis.

Three areas are evaluated in reviews every five years with standards set forth by the Department of Elementary and Secondary Education (DESE). Resource standards are concerned with the basic requirements that all districts must meet. They include the school's program of studies, class size, professional staff, administrative staff, and certification/planning time. Process standards are concerned more with the instructional and administrative processes used in schools. Performance standards include measures of student achievement in six areas.

Data for the Resource standards are derived from district reports to the Department and from supplemental information provided directly from the district. Out of the 10 points possible in this area, Gorin received all 10.

Data or information related to the Process standards are derived from team members' observations; interviews; advance questionnaires completed by teachers, support staff, parents, students, board members, counselors, librarians, and the administrator; documentation provided by the district; and the District's Response to the Standards. Of the 37 points possible, Gorin again received all 37.

In the Performance standards, the Missouri Assessment Program (MAP) data are based on student scores and come directly from the publishers of these tests. Districts through state reports, provide attendance and grade point average information. In this area, Gorin received nine points each for five out of the six areas for a total of 45 of the 54 points available. The only performance area not met was in the grade point averages of ninth- and tenth- grade students from the Gorin district.

Gorin District was awarded five strengths - two in the area of student staffing ratios, two in the area of achievement in grades three-five, and one in the area of professional development. Five concerns were also listed - two in the area of pre-school services, one in services to gifted students, one in student achievement in grade six-eight, and the one in the grade point average previously listed.

These concerns will be incorporated into the school's Comprehensive School Improve-ment Plan with strategies to address and ultimately improve each one.

In the very first MSIP review in 1992, the Gorin District was provisionally accredited, but through diligent dedication and work by the staff, parents, the school board, patrons, and students, the district attained an accredited rating in the next round in 1997, repeating it in this 2002 review.
