School Board Receives Two Resignations At March Meeting

With the 2002-03 school year winding down the Scotland County R-I Board of Education spent much of the March 26 meeting of the board of education looking toward next year.

The board learned it will have at least two positions to fill prior to the start of the next school year.

Kelly Danilson, elementary school physical education instructor and junior high coach, submitted a letter of resignation. Danilson indicated he and his wife have been offered jobs with the Cedar Rapids, IA, school district.

"Kelly has been a great addition to our school and we hate to see him leave but this will be an excellent opportunity for the Danilson's as they can now work together in the same school, both teaching P.E.," stated SCR-I superintendent LeRoy Huff.

The board also received a letter of resignation from Margie Garringer, high school secretary for the past 18 years.

"Margie has been a most valued employee during her time with our district," Huff stated. "The board and I wish her well in her new job in Oklahoma."

The board voted 7-0 to accept both resignations.

Basement Bids

The board received two bids for the basement concrete work for next year's building trades home. Monroe Construction of Memphis submitted the low bid of $27,087.13. Hamlin Construction of Edina, which had provided the service the past several years, submitted a bid of $27,920.

The board voted 7-0 to accept Monroe Construction's bid for the cement work on the 2003-04 building trades home.

Bus Bids

Despite the gloomy economic picture, the SCR-I board voted unanimously to solicit bids for the purchase of a new school bus.

"There is a line item in this year's budget for the purchase of a bus and the board wished to exercise the option of advertising for bus bids to see if the prices received would be lower than the budgeted figure," Huff said. "Due to the current financial crisis it is very unlikely that a bus line item will be incorporated into next year's budget, so the feeling of the board was to explore the options available this year."

A side note to the discussion on bids was the fact that the board stressed that the action in no way bound the district to making any bus purchases with respect to the bids.

Those interested in bidding on a bus must have the appropriate paperwork submitted by 3:00 p.m. April 9th.

Board Reorganization

The board will hold a special meeting April 10 at 6:30 p.m. to certify the April 6 election results, swear-in new members and elect officers.

Overnight Trips

FFA Advisor Bill Cottrell presented two requests for board approval for overnight trips for students.

Members of the FFA chapter requested permission to attend the state FFA convention, spending the night in Columbia on April 24. The FFA Grassland Team requested permission to attend the National Range Judging contest in Oklahoma City, OK May 5-10.

Both requests received unanimous approval by the board.

Homeless Coordinator

Annually the board of education is required by the Department of Elementary and Secondary Education as part of the MSIP review process to have a homeless coordinator in place for the district. The board voted 7-0 to appoint Ken Cross to this position, which is responsible for seeing to all needs of any child in the district who is identified as homeless and to insure the academic needs of the students are provided for.

Executive Session

In executive session the board received the teacher evaluations from principals Rob Moore and Dave Shalley. Following the review the board voted in accordance with the recommendations presented by the principals.
