SCMH Celebrating National Laboratory Week April 20-26

Clinical laboratory pro-fessionals are key members of the SCMH healthcare team. They have the skills to unlock important medical information critical to the diagnosis, treatment, and early prevention of medical diseases.

Since medical laboratory professionals often work "behind- the-scenes," few people know much about critically important testing that laboratorians perform every day.

On April 20 - 26, 2003, laboratorians will celebrate National Laboratory Week, giving them an opportunity to promote medical laboratory professions, to recruit students to the field, to thank technologists and technicians, build morale, and gain visibility for the laboratory throughout the institution and the community.

The laboratory at SCMH is a technical center of computerized equipment, doing over 100 different types of analyses, with over 94,000 tests performed annually.

The laboratory is used by local physicians, as well as, those in a 200 miles radius, doing tests on local patients and faxing results to the remote physicians.

This service saves time and traveling for the patient.

The SCMH lab also offers several free wellness screenings throughout the year, including screenings for colon cancer, cholesterol, diabetes, and several others.

Members of the Scotland County Memorial Hospital Laboratory team are Pam Barnes, S.M. (A.S.C.P.) Laboratory Manager; Jeanette Fogle, Laboratory Assistant; Lezah Glover, Laboratory Assistant; Kathy Miller, M.T. (A.S.C.P.) Medical Technologist; and Richard Jackson, M.T. (A.M.T.) Medical Technologist.
