Council Learns Labor Day Is Tentative Start Date For Construction Of New Pool

Labor Day is the anticipated starting date for the new swimming pool project for the City of Memphis. Mayor Ron Alexander gave a project update to the city council at the June 3 meeting of the Board of Aldermen for the City of Memphis.

Alexander stated that city engineer Ron Shy had been working with the pool designer and the team had visited the work site in Memphis earlier that week. The Mayor noted that preliminary work has indicated that additional funds may be required for the project as well as additional in-kind services by city workers.

The pool was not the only water issue that the council discussed. Treasurer Michele Drummond gave a report regarding the city's water and sewer funds. The council agreed that water rates need to be reviewed. Shy will be in Memphis in the next week or two and a workshop will be scheduled with the council to review the existing water rates and the possibility of increasing the rates.

Liquor Licenses

Under new business on the agenda the city council received applications for liquor licenses from seven different businesses in Memphis. The council voted 3-0 (Alderman Mike Stone was absent from the meeting) to approve licenses for D.J.'s Outdoor & Spirits Shop, The Party Shack, Gas & More, Casey's General Store, Pamida and Shelly B's. Alderman Ron Gardner was excused from the meeting at this point and the council voted 2-0 to approve his application for the license for Pizza Hut.

Department Reports

The water plant roof has been rebuilt. Superintendent Dennis Howard reported the costs exceeded the bid amount of $9,156 by a total of $2,216.71. The department completed repairs on the water line at the Baker Farm pond and the crew has begun work on the new water line on Knott Street. Howard also reported that the Department of Natural Resources had completed its inspection of the dam at Lake Show-Me and it had passed the inspection.

The street department painted the lines on the square prior to the Memorial Day celebration. Work continues on the new storm drain on East Madison Street. Superintendent Roy Monroe also told the council that Dennis Kraus indicated some fence needed to be replaced at the Baker Farm. The council agreed to seek bids on the repairs and review the issue at the July meeting.

Aldermen Reports

Alderman Gardner presented a letter from landowners Sandra Miller, Cinda Barrett and Dorothy McCarty requesting the east end of Turner Street be officially closed and deeded back to the property owners. The council voted 3-0 to close the east end of the street.

Alderman Lucas Remley noted several picnic tables at Johnson Park needed to be painted and also pointed out some trees needed to be trimmed. Howard indicated he would review the park but noted the tables had just been painted earlier this spring.

Mayor's Report

Mayor Alexander presented a request to extend the sale period for fireworks to include the weekend following the Fourth of July. The council voted to extend the sales period as well as the period for allowing fireworks to be shot off until midnight on Sunday, July 6.

Meeting Date Change

Due to the Fourth of July holiday the council voted to change the meeting time for the July meeting to Thursday, July 3rd at 5:15 p.m.
