Dennis Lane Bowling, 55, of Luray died at his home on Monday, January 20, 2003.

He was born on April 27, 1947 in Burlington, Iowa. Dennis was the son of Carl and Mary Elizabeth (Judd) Wittstock.

Dennis joined the United States Marine Corps on May 25, 1965. He served a tour of duty in Vietnam, where he earned a Purple Heart, a Presidential Unit Citation, a Good Conduct Medal, a National Defense Service Medal, a Vietnamese Service Medal, a Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal, and a Rifle Marksman Badge. Dennis earned his G.E.D. in February, 1967, while in the Marines. He was honorably discharged from the Marines with the rank of Corporal E-4 in 1969.

In 1970 he was married to Janice Carpenter at the Lutheran Church in Mt. Pleasant, Iowa. He was then married to the former Cindy Bass.

Dennis was self-employed as a carpenter. He enjoyed fishing, carpentry, and most of all, spending time with his grandsons. Dennis was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post #2561.

He was preceded in death by his mother and a brother, Larry Bowling.

He is survived by his children: Christalina and husband Philip Swailes of Mt. Pleasant, IA, Theresa Bowling of Saukville, WI, and Sarita Bowling of Mt. Pleasant, IA; a stepson, Christopher and wife Christy Churman of Port Washington, IA; sisters, Sharon and husband John Parker of New London, IA, Beverly and husband Gary Green of Panhandle, TX, Carol and husband Butch Parrott, of Mt. Pleasant, IA, Tammy and husband Neil Hardy of Panhandle, TX; a brother, Brad and wife Treva Wittstock of Arbela, MO; and six grandchildren.

A Memorial Service was held at the Clark County War Memorial in Kahoka on Saturday, January 25, 2003, at 10:00 a.m. with the Wallace W. Gillespie Memorial V.F.W. Post #4958 of Memphis providing military rites. Memorial graveside services and inurnment was in the Wittstock Family Cemetery north of Granger, MO on Saturday at 11:30 a.m. Memorials are suggested to the family. Gerth Funeral Service handled the arrangements from their Memphis chapel.
