LELA M. STONE
(5/29/1907 - 4/7/2003)

Lela M. Stone, 95, of LaBelle, MO, died Monday morning, April 7, 2003, at the LaBelle Manor Care Center.

She was born the daughter of Thomas Jurden and Hannah (Inman) Phillips on May 29, 1907, in Scotland County, Missouri.

On February 26, 1925, she married Floyd Stone. He preceded her in death in 1963.

Lela and Floyd had three children - Dorothy, Cleo, and Cletus -- and also raised Floyd's sister, Laura, as one of their own.

Floyd and Lela were farmers in Scotland and Knox counties. Lela worked for the Edina Glove Factory for 28 years. She retired and moved to Maywood in 1970.

She enjoyed gardening and grew the most beautiful flowers. Lela also tried to make a quilt every year. She shared these with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Most of all, Lela enjoyed having all of her family visit. Until the last four or five years, Lela was able to drive to Rutledge and visit with her family and friends.

She was preceded in death by her husband; a daughter, Cleo Brinkley; parents; brothers Vernie, Ambrose, Virgil, Leslie, Waid, Claud, and Mallie; two baby brothers who died in infancy; two sons-in-law: Ray Hettinger and J.J. Brinkley; and a sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Laura and Jim Reeves.

She is survived by her daughter: Dorothy Hettinger of rural Edina; her son, Cletus and his wife, Laverna Stone of Maywood, MO; grandchildren: Marsha and husband Phil Ordonio of Greentop, MO, David Hettinger of Pierce, CO, Karen and husband Chuck Reeves of Knox City, MO, Cleta Burton of Palmyra, MO, Laura and husband Mike Rathke of Marion, Iowa, and Michael Stone of Tampa, FL; and 10 great-grandchildren.

Funeral services were Thursday, April 10, 2003, at the Gerth Funeral Chapel in Memphis with Pastor Jack Sumption officiating. Burial was in the Greensburg Cemetery. Memorials are suggested to the LaBelle Manor Care Center.

Condolences may be sent to the Stone family via email at gerths@gerths.com.
