ROBERT D. WELLMAN
(12/20/1922 - 4/17/2003)




Robert D. Wellman, 80, Downing, MO, passed away April 17, 2003, at Boone Hospital Center in Columbia, MO. He was the son of Clyde Homer and Mabel Edna Cowan Wellman, and was born at Stahl in Putnam County, MO, on December 20, 1922. On May 24, 1961, in Kirksville, MO, he was united in marriage to Rosemary Ellen Faris of New Providence, IA. To this union one son, John Robert, was born. He is survived by his wife, Rosemary of Downing, MO; one son, John Wellman and his wife, Barbara of Marceline, MO; three grandsons, Brandon, Thomas and Brett Wellman, all of Marceline, MO; one sister, Margaret Western of Kirksville, MO; two brothers, Jack Wellman of Kirksville, MO, and Harold Wellman and his wife, Neta Marie of rural Novinger, MO; two sisters-in-law, Beverly Wellman of Crescent City, FL, and Zenna Faris of Union, IA; two brothers-in-law, Edward Faris and his wife, Mary of New Providence, IA, and Gary Faris and his wife, Joyce of Iowa Falls, IA, and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, Clyde Homer and Mabel Wellman, and three brothers, George, Fred, and Walter Wellman. Robert was a graduate of Unionville (MO) High School and worked in the retail business in Iowa and Illinois for many years. After his marriage they moved to a dairy farm at Downing and remained there until his death. After retiring from farming, Robert opened a custom woodworking shop and made beautiful oak and walnut furniture and repaired furniture. He was an avid hunter as long as his health permitted and enjoyed being out with his dog. He had a special love for his son and grandsons and still enjoyed taking them fishing and listening to their hunting stories and working with them in the woodshop. Funeral services were held April 21, 2003, at Payne Funeral Chapel in Memphis, MO with Pastor David Hartsfield officiating. Music was provided by organist Ann Luther and vocalist Lori Fulk. Pallbearers were Mike Wellman, Mark Wellman, Roger Wellman, James Western, Denny Faris, Jim Faris, Jeff Faris and Kim Faris. Honorary pallbearers were Alan Wellman, Greg Wellman, Dick Faris, Jon Faris, and Greg Faris. Interment was in the Memphis Cemetery, Memphis, MO. Expressions of sympathy may be made to Downing First Responders, Scotland County Library, or Downing United Methodist Church and may be left at or mailed to Payne Funeral Chapel, 202 E. Madison, Memphis, MO 63555.
