STELLA MARGARET BILLINGS "FIDDLE DEE"
(6/1/1924 - 5/3/2003)

Stella Margaret Billings, 78, of the Arbela-Granger area, a resident of the Clark County Nursing Home, died Saturday evening, May 3, 2003 at Scotland County Memorial Hospital in Memphis.

She was born the daughter of Walter and Dora (Herrmuth) Davis on June 1, 1924, near Willmathsville, Missouri.

Stella attended school in Granger, graduating from high school.

She married Ross "Shorty" Billings on December 28, 1942. He preceded her in death on February 20, 1998.

The Billings were very active in the Wallace W. Gillespie Memorial V.F.W. Post #4958 in Memphis. Stella was a life-long member of the Auxiliary.

Stella also loved music, especially the fiddle. She and Ross enjoyed attending the Country Music Jam Session on the third Sunday of the month at Selma, Iowa. They enjoyed performing for seniors and at area benefits.

"She won $100 in a fiddle contest at Bible Grove (in the 1990s) and she couldn't have been more excited if she had just been elected President of the United States," her son Richard recalled.

Stella lived for her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, especially taking them fishing.

Her parents, husband, a brother, and four sisters - one in infancy - preceded her in death.

She is survived by her sons: Richard and wife Beverly Billings of Gorin, and Tom and wife Linda Billings of Arbela; a sister, Betty Turnbow of Memphis; a brother, Bill and wife Katie Davis of Mission, TX; five grandchildren: Kim and her husband Kevin Carr of Warsaw, IL, Lisa and husband Rick Hunziker and Leslie and his wife Erin Billings, all of Kahoka, and Michael and Michelle Billings of Arbela; three step grandchildren: Christopher and his wife Michelle Van Hoozen of Memphis, Jennifer Morris and Shawna and her husband Bobby Bair, all of Arbela; three great-grandchildren and 13 step great-grandchildren.

Funeral Services were held at 2 p.m. on Tuesday, May 6, 2003, at the Gerth Funeral Chapel in Memphis with the Rev. Ernest Deatrick officiating. Burial was in the Luray Cemetery. John Spray provided special music. Steve Holt, Blake Holt, Gary Holt, Larry Mohr, Weston Smith, and Ronnie Dochterman served as casketbearers. Michael Billings, Leslie Billings, and Christopher Van Hoozen served as honorary casketbearers.

Memorials are suggested to the American Lung Association.

Gerth Funeral Service handled their arrangements from their Memphis chapel.
