John R. Connor Sr., 88, of Paragould, AR died Saturday, May 17, 2003, at Arkansas Methodist Medical Center in Paragould.

He was born May 3, 1915, in Hubbard, Texas. He graduated from Texas A & M in 1935 with a degree in Agronomy. On August 10, 1940, he married Mary Alice Owen and she survives. Mr. Connor entered the U.S. Army in 1943 and served as a First Lieutenant in Okinawa and Korea.

He was employed by the Federal Government in Arkansas and in Memphis, MO. He retired in 1975 as the supervisor of the Scotland County Soil Conservation Service.

Mr. and Mrs. Connor returned to Paragould, AR for retirement. Mr. Connor enjoyed hunting, fishing and collecting antique glassware.

While in Missouri he supported soil conservation programs in the county high school, including the building of a small lake with surrounding wildlife area and a display of rocks from the 50 states.

Mr. Connor set up a Texas A & M scholarship program for descendants of John Charles O'Connor, his grandfather.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Jim and Ida Mae Amonette Connor, and two brothers. Survivors include his wife, Mary Connor of Paragould; a son, John Connor Jr., of Ogden Utah; and a sister, Mildred Roemer of Memphis, TN.

A graveside service was held in Hubbard, TX, under the direction of Wade Funeral Home in Hubbard. Heath Funeral Home in Paragould was in charge of local arrangements.
