HARRY LEONARD HARTLEY
(5/23/1937 - 7/10/2003)




Harry Leonard Hartley, 66, of Bible Grove, Missouri, died Thursday, July 10, 2003, at the VA Hospital in Iowa City.

He was born on May 23, 1937, to Harold and Ollie (Annis) Hartley in Ottumwa, IA.

Harry married the former Vivian Lucille Spiker on January 15, 1954, in Burlington. She survives.

To this union three daughters and a son were born.

He was an avid hunter, fisherman, and gardener. A fresh crop of his sweet corn is just about ready, according to his son Floyd.

Harry loved being outdoors and spending time with his friends and family. He especially enjoyed barbecuing.

His parents, three stepsisters, and two stepbrothers preceded him in death.

He is survived by his wife; his children: Audrey and her husband Larry Spray of Bible Grove, Theresa and her husband David Fleming of Bloomfield, Iowa, Terri Campbell of Memphis, and Floyd and his wife Jeanne Hartley of Queen City; his sisters: Dorothy and her husband David Enloe of Ottumwa, Iowa, Patricia and her husband Ron Van Niewaal of Lomax, Illinois, Grace Woollums of Ottumwa, Iowa, and Sandra Wysong of Lomax; a brother, Harold and his wife Juanita Hartley of Ottumwa, Iowa; 10 grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; four step-grandchildren; 10 step-great-grandchildren; sisters- and brothers-in-law; several nieces and nephews; and very special dear friends, Ray and Phyllis Nixon of Dallas City, Illinois.

Funeral services were held at 2 p.m., Sunday, July 13, 2003, at the Gerth Funeral Chapel in Memphis with the Rev. Larry Smith officiating. Barbara Smith assisted on the organ. Chad Davis, Phillip Padgett, Jeff Davis, Clayton Miller, Tyson Blessing, and Cody Hartley served as pallbearers. Ryan Flemming, Shawn Phillips, Casey Kiem, Kaleb Nunan, Randy Van Niewaal, Rodney Van Niewaal, Jason Spiker, Robert Carpenter, Ronnie Walker, Kenny Hartley, Alan Hartley, Jack Enloe, Damon Spray, and Gene Hilpert served as honorary pallbearers. Burial was in the Bible Grove Christian Church Cemetery. The Wallace W. Gillespie Memorial V.F.W. Post #4958 of Memphis provided military graveside rites.

Memorials are suggested to the family and can be left at or mailed to Gerth Funeral Service, 115 S. Main, Memphis, MO 63555.
