JOYCE MARGARET ARNOLD DABNEY

Joyce Margaret Arnold Dabney, 73, of Edina, MO, passed away September 8, 2003, at her residence in Edina, MO.

On December 5, 1929, in Kirksville, MO, she was born the daughter of Ralph Walker and Vera C. Dodds Arnold and they preceded her in death.

On August 3, 1957 in Edina, MO, Joyce married LaVerne “Horse” Dabney.

She graduated from the St. Joseph’s Catholic High School in 1947, and Quincy College in Quincy, IL, in 1952. She also attended Webster University, St. Louis, MO, and Northeast Missouri State University in Kirksville, MO. Joyce was active during college in the Pi Lambda Sigma and Theta Phi Alpha sororities.

Joyce and LaVerne purchased the Ben Franklin Store in Edina, MO from her parents in 1964 and operated it until 1988. She was also a retired school teacher, teaching at Lewis, Shelby, and Knox County High School until her retirement in 1988.

She was a member of the St. Joseph Catholic Church in Edina, MO, the St. Ann’s Altar Society, the Culture Club where she served as past president, the Browning Club, the Lambda Rho Sorority, and the Federated Women’s Clubs in Edina. She was also a member of the Baring Country Club in Baring, MO, and the Edina Country Club in Edina, MO.

Joyce greatly enjoyed her family and was most proud of their numerous musical, academic and athletic endeavors throughout the years.

Joyce is survived by her husband, LaVerne “Horse” Dabney of Edina, MO; a son, John and his wife, Andrea Dabney of Memphis, MO; three daughters, Kristin Dabney of Wentzville, MO, Kathleen of Edina, MO, and her husband, Michael Bialota of Ocean Springs, MS, and Karen Dabney of Hannibal, MO; four grandchildren, Corry and Natalie Bialota and John Ryan and Dominic Paul Dabney; numerous nieces, nephews and cousins including Bill Szlapka of Santa Fe, NM.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held Thursday, September 11, 2003, at 11:00 a.m. at the St. Joseph Catholic Church in Edina, MO. Father Bill Peckman will officiate and music will be provided by Nancy Reardon and Dan and Pam Sherman. Burial will be in the St. Joseph New Catholic Cemetery at Edina, MO.

Visitation will be Wednesday, September 10, 2003, after 4:00 p.m. with the family receiving friends from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. at the Hudson-Rimer Funeral Home in Edina, MO. A Rosary will be held at 7:00 p.m. on Wednesday at the funeral home in Edina.

An expression of sympathy in memory of Joyce Dabney may be made to the St. Joseph Catholic Parish. A memorial may be left at or mailed to the Hudson-Rimer Funeral Home, P.O. Box 1, Edina, MO 63537.
