DON A. GARBATI

Don A. Garbati, 62, of Memphis, MO, passed away on September 14, 2003, at the Scotland County Care Center in Memphis, MO, after a long battle with cancer.
Don was born on June 6, 1941, in Barre, VT, the son of Anselmo (Sam) and Dorothy Pearl Garbati.
Don attended grade school in Vermont and graduated from Herbert Hoover High School in Glendale, CA.
He married Brooke Johnson on April 21, 1988 in Las Vegas, NV.
Don and Brooke owned and operated The Cheese Post in Downing, MO for 10 years. Then Don went to work for Barkers in Keosauqua, IA until the time of his illness. Don especially enjoyed hunting and was very attached to his dogs. He was a member of the Downing Lions Club, Downing, MO.
He is survived by his wife, Brooke Garbati of Memphis, MO; two step-children, Rosemary Harris of Memphis, MO and CJ Brose of St. Joseph, MO; his mother, Dorothy Garbati of Las Vegas, NV; two sisters, Selma Marie Hickey of Las Vegas, NV and Sylvia Ann McElreoth of Sweet Home, OR; two aunts, Esther Garbati and Evalina Sagris, both of Burlington, VT; one uncle, Joseph Barquin of Montpelier, VT; father-in-law, Richard Johnson and his wife, Sue of Baring, MO; mother-in-law, Carol West and husband, Charles of Memphis, MO; sister-in-law, Susan Glenn and her husband, Gary of Lee’s Summit, MO; brother-in-law, Sam Johnson of Memphis, MO; and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his father, Anselmo (Sam) Garbati; three uncles, Guido Garbati, Secondo Garbati, and Harlan Gage, Jr.; and two aunts, Aurora Barquin and Mildred Gage.
The family has suggested memorials to the Hospice 2000, Memphis United Methodist Church, or the American Cancer Society, and may be left at or mailed to Payne Funeral Chapel, 202 E. Madison, Memphis, MO 63555.
Visitation will be held at the United Methodist Church in Memphis, MO on Saturday, September 20, 2003, at 10:00 a.m., followed by funeral services at 11:00 a.m., with Carol Blackwell officiating. Music will be provided by Joan Hinds, organist; Rosemary Harris, flute; and the Mark Twain Chorale. Inurnment will be held at a later date in Vermont. Arrangements are being handled by the Payne Funeral Chapel, Memphis, MO.
