NELDA LEE JONES
(9/26/1917 - 9/27/2003)




Nelda Lee Jones, 86, of Granger, MO, passed away September 27, 2003, at the Scotland County Care Center in Memphis, MO.

She was born September 26, 1917, in Scotland County, MO, the only child of William Thomas and Mary Almira (Rhodes) Curry.

She spent her early years on a farm, which had previously been owned by her great-grandfather. She graduated from Downing High School and entered Kirksville State Teachers College, graduating from there in 1936 with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Education. She pursued additional education advancement from Central Missouri State College and the University of Missouri, Columbia, MO. Forty-one years of her life were devoted to a teaching career.

On June 25, 1947, she was united in marriage to Albert M. Jones. They made their home in Granger, MO.

Nelda was a member of the Presbyterian Church and was active in church and community affairs. She had served as chairperson of the Session of Scotland County Larger Parish of Presbyterian Churches. She and Albert were charter members of Downing House Museum in Memphis, MO. She was an active member of Memphis Business and Professional Women’s Club and had served on the Missouri B.P.W. governing board. She held membership in National, State and local Retired Teachers Associations. For many years she was an active member of Rebekah Lodge No. 632 and the Granger Household Science Extension Club.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Albert, on March 18, 1984; her parents; brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Robert and Verona Jones; a favorite uncle and aunt, John and Vada Rhodes; cousins and treasured friends

Following the death of her husband she continued managing the farm with the assistance of a valued friend, Warren J. Miller.

Nelda never refused helping neighbor’s children with their school homework. Many of them can repeat her credo “The more you read the more you know. The more you know the further you go.”

Memorials have been suggested to the Scotland County Memorial Library and may be left at or mailed to the Payne Funeral Chapel, 202 E. Madison, Memphis, MO 63555.

Funeral services were held September 30, 2003, at the Payne Funeral Chapel, Memphis, MO, with Jim Brown officiating. Music was by Angela Westhoff and Alisa Kigar. Body bearers were Ronnie Miller, John Miller, Joe Miller, Daryn Triplett, Brandyn Triplett, and Terry Smith. Interment was in the Campground Cemetery, western Scotland County, MO. Arrangements are being handled by the Payne Funeral Chapel, Memphis, MO.
