JV Girls Overcome Free Throw Woes To Beat Putnam

A terrible night at the free throw line was not enough to prevent the Scotland County junior varsity girls from coming from behind to defeat Putnam County 39-37 December 16 in Memphis.

"I was really pleased with the way we played them considering they played down some girls from their varsity team that played some substantial time in the Putnam County Tournament," said Coach Josh Smith. "We were really fortunate to win though because our free throw shooting was atrocious."

SCR-I made just five of 23 attempts from the charity stripe. Despite the dismal night at the free throw line, Scotland County rallied from a three-point deficit to start the fourth period and pull away for the two-point win.

The Lady Tigers pulled ahead 9-7 in the first period. That margin continued to the intermission as Jacqui Drummond had a couple buckets during the second quarter to help her team maintain a 19-17 advantage.

Putnam County rallied in the third period as SCR-I made just one of six free throw attempts. The Midgets took advantage and went ahead 27-24.

Angie Bulen had a couple key baskets in the fourth period to help the Lady Tigers come from behind. Ashley Frederick, Leslie Duley, Ashley Ellison and Megan Walker all had key baskets during the run as well.

Brittney Courtright led Scotland County with 10 points. Drummond and Bulen each finished with six points.
