Tigers Start Second Half Of Hoops Season With Victory

Maybe a three-week vacation was just what the Scotland County Tigers needed. After a 1-5 start to the season the SCR-I varsity boys basketball team showed no signs of rust as they defeated Knox County 66-59 in front of the home Memphis crowd January 3.

The Eagles came out on fire to start the game. Laden Force made a pair of three pointers to help Knox County build an early advantage.

Aaron Dale kept SCR-I close with seven points in the first period. Clint Cottrell added a couple scores before Danny Roach sank the shot on a drive to the basket to put Scotland County on top 17-16 at the end of the first quarter.

The lead went back and forth to start period two. Dale scored inside to start the period on a nice pass from Chase Moore. The senior guard continued to distribute the ball as he found Cottrell underneath with a nice pass for an easy score.

Cottrell took over from there. He scored the final nine points of the first half for Scotland County. Moore dished out another assist during the run and Michael Lodewegen got into the act with a nice pass to Cottrell for an easy score. That put SCR-I ahead 32-31 at the intermission.

Moore opened the second half with a lay-up courtesy of a Roach assist. Jake Fogle hit two free throws as SCR-I built its biggest lead of the game at five points.

Knox County was able to the tie the game up at 36-36 before Cottrell completed a three-point play off an offensive rebound.

The excellent ball movement by the team continued as Dale got back-to-back buckets in the paint off assists by Nick Oldham and Cottrell.

A pair of free throws by Moore helped Scotland County end the quarter with a 47-38 advantage.

The two teams traded baskets to start the fourth quarter. Dale and Fogle did the bulk of the work for Scotland County. They combined for 14 points early in the fourth period. But Force heated up from three point range again to give the Tigers a scare. The double digit lead evaporated as Force got hot. He hit his third triple of the fourth period and was fouled on the shot. He went to the free throw line with his team down just 63-57 with 1:29 to play. Less than a minute before the Tigers had led by 10.

Force missed the free throw and Fogle converted on two from the charity stripe at the other end to give SCR-I some breathing room. The Tigers missed three of four free throws to end the game but it wasn't enough for the Eagles as SCR-I went on to the 66-59 win.

Cottrell and Dale both had 20 points to lead a well-balanced attack. Fogle finished with 12 points and Roach added nine in the win. The Tigers improve to 2-5 on the season.
