County Kick-Off Cancer Crusade Group Meets

Scotland County kicked off its annual community crusade on March 30 at Keith’s Café in Memphis. There were over 50 volunteers in attendance. Guests included Brenda Carlin, community specialist with the American Cancer Society, Chris Tinkle, cancer support group leader and reach to recovery volunteer, and Diane Tague, Relay For Life chairperson.

Community “door knockers” will start to make their rounds among Scotland County. If you aren’t at home they will leave a door knob envelope for you to fill out and return.

The community crusade is an annual door-to-door fundraising campaign to raise money for the American Cancer Society. Leading this year’s campaign are co-chairs Maxine Cook and Dorothy Harvey.

“The people of Scotland County are very dedicated to eradicating cancer in our lifetime, the door-to-door community crusade for 2003 raised $6,500,” said American Cancer Society Community Specialist for Scotland County Brenda Carlin. “This is an amazing amount of money for a community of less than 5000 people.”

If you would like to donate to the community crusade contact Maxine Cook at 660-465-2204 or Dorothy Harvey at 660-465-8566.

The American Cancer Society is the nationwide, community-based, voluntary health organization dedicated to eliminating cancer as a major health problem by preventing cancer, saving lives and diminishing suffering from cancer through research, education, advocacy and service.
