Local Marine Returns From Deployment

Marine Corps Lance Cpl. Jason M. Small, son of Theresa L. and Michael K. Small of Memphis, recently returned from a routine, scheduled deployment on board the USS Peleliu, homeported in San Diego, CA, while assigned to the 13th Marine Expeditionary Unit (MEU), based out of Camp Pendelton, CA.

During the deployment, Smallís unit conducted humanitarian assistance, security and stabilization missions in Iraq. They also patrolled international waters in the Red Sea and Horn of Africa to deter the transport of terrorist personnel and equipment.

Smallís unit is an expeditionary intervention force with the ability to rapidly organize for combat operations in virtually any environment. MEUs are composed of more than 2,000 personnel and are divided into an infantry battalion, aircraft squadron, support group and command element. With this combination, Smallís unit supplies and sustains itself for either quick mission accomplishment or clearing the way for follow-on forces.

Small is a 2001 graduate of Scotland County R-I High School of Memphis and joined the Marines in September 2001.
