Cantril Mail Man Injured In Crash Near Arbela

A Cantril, IA, rural postal carrier suffered minor injuries in a two-car crash in rural Scotland County at 11:15 a.m. Saturday, August 21.

According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, Paul E. Phillips, 49, of Luray was traveling southbound on a gravel road eight miles north of Arbela. His 1996 Ford Ranger was on the wrong side of the roadway when it struck a northbound 2002 Chevrolet pickup as the vehicles rounded a corner. The driver of the second vehicle, Kurt A. Bensinger, 57, of Winter Park, FL, was not injured in the crash.

Phillips was taken by Scotland County Ambulance to Scotland County Memorial Hospital for treatment of his injuries.

The highway patrol was assisted at the scene by the Scotland County Sheriff’s Department, the ambulance service and Scotland County Fire and Rescue.

Phillips was issued a summons for driving on the wrong side of the roadway. His vehicle was totaled and was towed from the scene by Dynamite’s Wrecker Service. Bensinger’s truck sustained extensive damage and also was towed from the site.

Despite the Saturday accident, Scotland County continues to have the lowest crash statistics in the entire 16-county Troop Region of the patrol.

Troopers investigated five traffic crashes in Scotland County last month, bringing the total for the year through six months to 23 accidents. There have been 12 injuries and zero fatalities in the county in 2004.

Overall in Troop B there have been 1,081 crashes in the first half of the year resulting in 597 injuries and 21 fatalities.
