Chamber To Host Christmas Opening in Memphis on Friday

While many area merchants successfully opened the holiday shopping season on Sunday, the Memphis Area Chamber of Commerce will kick-off the traditional start of the anticipated spending spree with the Christmas Opening festivities on the Memphis Square Friday, November 26th.

The Friday after Thanksgiving is one of the biggest shopping days of the year. Local merchants will feature numerous sales and expanded hours to accommodate local shoppers.

MACC officials will mark the event with the traditional lighting of the square. Chamber president Chuck Kigar will throw the switch at 6:00 p.m. to light all of the holiday lights and decorations that have been purchased over the years by the MACC in conjunction with the city.

Visitors on the square will be serenaded by a number of special musical acts. The Evening on Broadway group will perform in front of the theatre. Newly crowned Miss Northeast Missouri Jessica Erwin also will be performing on the square. The Scotland County Ministerial Alliance is organizing Christmas carolers for the event.

Memphis Mayor Ron Alexander will address the gathering for the lighting ceremony.

A number of lucky spectators will walk away with some extra shopping funds. The MACC will hold a drawing for a $100 prize in Memphis Bucks. Ten other participants will win $10 in Memphis Bucks. The winner will also be announced in the Memphis Democrat’s Who Am I? game with $100 going to one lucky winner.

The festivities will also serve as the kick-off for the MACC Christmas decorating contest. The chamber will again feature special categories for both residential and commercial entrants.

“We would love to see lots of entries this year so please nominate your friends, your neighbors or anyone who you feel is deserving,” said organizer Tammi Adams. Nominations may be submitted to the Memphis Democrat office. The deadline is December 15th. First prize in the contest is $75 with $50 for second and $25 for third. All prizes will be paid in Memphis Bucks. The business winner will receive special recognition.
